Haiti Disaster Relief

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, one of the most tragic events in modern history took place in Haiti.   An earthquake measuring 7.0 jolted through the heart of Port-au-Prince, capital city of Haiti, crumbling even the strongest buildings, including the presidential palace.  Considering Haiti's condition prior to the earthquake, to say they are in need would be an understatement.

Though the need is unprecedented in Haiti, a network of Dominican churches and missionaries are cooperating in order to execute a well-planned relief effort. While our hearts break for our neighbors, we are encouraged to see Dominicans stepping up to give, to volunteer assistance, and spearhead a Christian response.

Several church leaders have been working together since the earthquake to assess the situation and what can be done. As we want to respond with compassion we also want to be wise in how we help. Unfortunately, millions of dollars and countless man hours will be spent worldwide in trying to bring relief, only to find the effort derailed by criminal activity and poor management due to the enormity of the crisis. As much as is possible, we want to avoid this scenario.

IBEM (our church) will be joining other missionaries and local Dominican churches in helping a local Baptist church and school outside of Port-au-Prince minister to the needs of their community.

Pastor and Team Leader Gary Hale and a couple of men from IBEM will be travelling at the end of next week along with other missionaries and church leaders in order to minister at the church in Haiti. A warehouse has been rented near the church and a security guard has been hired in order to protect the supplies donated and brought in by the Dominican churches. Supplies such as bottled water, canned goods, soap, fuel, bandages, building materials, etc. are needed as the Haitian church begins to rebuild and reaches out to the people in the community.

This opportunity is focused on helping the local church to effectively minister to the needs of their people. As people begin to rebuild their lives, they will identify with the Haitian church as caring for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. This will provide a long-term opportunity for follow-up.

If you or your church would like to cooperate with our Dominican church (IBEM) and others, we invite you to give a secure online donation. One hundred percent of what is received will go directly to the relief effort. If you have any questions, please feel free to write us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
